Photographer and visual chronicler of urban culture.

Ricky Powell (1961–2021) was an American photographer whose work became an essential record of New York’s urban culture beginning in the 1980s. Self-taught and deeply connected to the streets, Powell developed a direct, honest, and unpretentious eye, capturing the raw and spontaneous energy of the city and its inhabitants.

Known as The Fourth Beastie Boy, Ricky Powell was a privileged witness to the rise of hip-hop, punk, and the skate scene, portraying iconic figures such as the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Madonna, and Andy Warhol in a natural and intimate way. His images do not seek poses or artifice, but rather the truth of the moment.

His photography is characterized by the use of black and white, intuitive framing, and a strong narrative quality. Powell saw the camera as an extension of his presence on the street, becoming an active observer of urban life, capable of capturing intimate moments amid the city’s chaos.

Beyond music and art, his work captures the diversity, humor, marginality, and vitality of New York, creating a visual archive essential to understanding an era and a culture. Ricky Powell didn’t photograph from a distance: he was part of the scene he documented.

For Lavio Gallery, it was a true pleasure to have worked with Ricky Powell during his lifetime and an honor to accompany and represent his work. His legacy remains an authentic, unfiltered testament to street culture—a free-spirited perspective that transformed the everyday into visual history.
